Do you remember...

I know it's been a while since I've posted. It's been hectic with school starting back up and I'd rather post quality than quantity.

Anywho, more and more lately I've been having vivid flashbacks to when I was younger. A lot of them related to movies.

The sights, sounds, surroundings, feelings rush at me and emotionaly knock me over.

For example:
Casper was released on May 26, 1995. I don't remember seeing it in theaters but I do remember that the VHS came out in October of that year. It was the stretch between Halloween and Christmas when I remember my Sundays were spent after homework was done, the fireplace crackling, following my then crush, Christina Ricci and Casper on their adventure at Whipstaff Manor. Never did I ponder that I'd be thinking about those moments 15 years later.

First off, Hook is not a bad movie. I'm not certain if people are turned off by Peter Pan growing up or what. Music is wonderful by John Williams. Yes I may be biased because it's a Spielberg film but there are worst movies. Hook will be celebrating it's 20th Anniversary in December of this year. I remember going to see this in a theater in Chillicothe with my dad and sister, who now that I think about it was only 4 1/2 at the time. I wonder if she remembers. Anywho, I remember the theater was down a hill and the roads were wet from snow that had fallen. When we went in, it was light out, but something happened that when we left it was twilight. I sit here writing and I feel that something about that was magical to me.
Finally, the E.T. VHS came out on October 27, 1988. The casing was black with the top shield being green. I thought that was totally awesome that they did that for the movie because of E.T's home, the Green Planet. Turns out it was to detect counterfeit tapes. Pepsi also ran promotions with the video release. I have somewhere in my collection a cutout from a 12 Pack Pepsi case, featuring a drawn Elliott and E.T. whisking away from the moon. I rode my back around the neighborhood, Spring of 89' thinking I was being followed. I would lift up on the handle bars, hoping I would soar into sky.

On the negative side, the thing I remember about seeing "Hitch" was that I broke up with an ex the next day.

My point is we can remember a movie and like, love or hate it. But there is so much more.

So think about it. Think about a favorite movie or the first time you saw a film. What do you remember?

TRAILER: WAR HORSE (2011)

From director Steven Spielberg comes “War Horse,” an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

“War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war— a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history. Music by John Williams and produced by Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. (Synopsis provided by Dreamworks)

And there's no aliens.

Set to open December 28, 2011

TRAILER: WINNIE THE POOH

I'm a little behind with this one but I had no idea that Disney was going through with this. Watch this and not get emotional.

Misreading a letter from Christopher Robin, Pooh convinces Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo, and Eeyore that their young friend has been captured by a creature named "Backson" and they set out to save him.

Jim Cummings, John Cleese and Craig Ferguson are just some of the actors to provide the voices to the beloved characters of the Hundred Acre Wood.

Opening July 15th in the US.

Sound Tracks: The Aviator (1985)

Hey ya folks. Got a less known track for you this week.

It's from the 1985 film "The Aviator" starring Christopher Reeve and Rosanna Arquette.

I am very unfamiliar with the composer, Dominic Frontiere but I can not stop listening to it and it's definitely now in my top 10 track favorites.

Special Thanks to CapedWonder for the tracks which can be found HERE if you can't get enough along with the Supergirl soundtrack composed by the great Jerry Goldsmith.

If you are a Superman: The Movie fan or a Chris Reeve fan, do yourself a favor and check out CapedWonder. It is a excellent website that all movie sites should strive to be.

Enjoy!

My Work: Part 1

I've been wanting to put up some of my work on to my blog to, well, show off and to...no, that's about it.

For one of my classes, everyone was assigned a course to make a Corporate video about in the Digital Video and Sound Major at Columbus State Community College. Students had to film, interview, find archived footage and edit into a quick, spiffy 1 min teaser.

My video was for the Corporate video class which teaches you how to make a corporate video.

So here you go. Any companies that want to sign me after seeing this mind blowing piece of art, I have no equipment. Please buy me equipment. :-)

Who Directed Poltergeist?

Seems like a relatively easy question to answer. You check IMDB, the DVD cover, credits at beginning or ending of the movie. They all say Tobe Hooper, who is known for the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” fame. But even after almost 30 years, there's still doubt in the air.

You see, Steven Spielberg thought up the story and along with Michael Grais and Mark Victor, wrote the script. Spielberg also produced the film and was reported to be on set every day of the shoot, except for the 3 days he was in Hawaii with George Lucas after the release of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. He was by contract, not allowed to direct another movie while he was working on “E.T: The Extra Terrestrial”. The LA Times showed up on the set one day to see Spielberg filming some 2nd Unit (he was allowed by his contract) shots at the beginning of the film with the kids and the remote control cars. That is how the rumor got started.

But it didn't stop there. Over the years, many of the actors and crew members have spoken up about the matter:

JoBeth Williams (Diane Freeling)
“It was a collaboration with Steven having final say.”

Bill Varney (Sound Mixer)
“Tobe dropped by one or two times, but he had no input whatsoever as far as our (sound) work was concerned. Basically, Tobe didn't participate at all.”

Dennis E. Jones (Production Manager)
"Some directors kick the producer off the set. In this particular case, that didn't occur. It was an amicable situation. Tobe seemed to resolve Steven's participation in his mind. But I'm sure inside he was hurting."

Mike Fenton (Casting Director)
"Did he (Tobe) direct the film? Not that I saw."

Perhaps one of the most damaging quotes came from Zelda Rubinstein who played psychic Tangina:

“I can tell you that Steven directed all six days I was there. I only worked six days on the film and Steven was there. Tobe set up the shots and Steven made the adjustments. You're not going to hear that from Tobe Hooper, you’ll hear it from Zelda, because that was my honest to God experience. I’m not a fan of Tobe Hooper. I feel he allowed… I don’t know how to say this… he allowed some unacceptable chemical agents into his work. I felt that immediately."

I could go on and give more crew testimonies but let's go in to some of the stories from the set. Like the scene in which Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) is holding on to the bed railing for dear life. The scene really upset the child actor and she fell apart. Spielberg stopped the production, took her in to his arms and told her she didn't need to film the scene again.

During the scene where Robbie (Oliver Robins) is being strangled, the clown's arms became extremely tight and Robbins started to choke. He screamed out "I can't breathe!" and Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper thought that the boy was ad-libbing and continued to tell him to look at the camera. When Spielberg saw his face turning blue, he ran over and removed the clown's arms from the child's neck. Why the hell isn't Hooper taking charge?

Ok, now forget everything you've read up to now. The film looks and feels like a Spielberg film. This case can be argued because Spielberg was said to have storyboarded every shot so that may be why it looks like one of his films. However if you look at Hooper's line of films, none of them look, feel or did as well as Poltergeist. It's also interesting that Spielberg has produced over 50 productions that he didn't direct and they all don't have this mystery of Directed by Unknown except this one.

In my opinion, I believe Spielberg set out to let Tobe Hooper direct Poltergeist because he contractually could not. During the process he couldn't fully give his baby up, either because he's too protective or because of an incompetent director. Perhaps Hooper gave up and became a fall guy. It was said that once Production wrapped, Hooper wasn't involved with post production. A director that's not involved with 1/3 of the production process should not be called a director.

I hope someday that MGM, the crew, Hooper and Spielberg will get together and acknoledge that there was two director's on the film Poltergeist. All prints of the film from that point would be altered to state:
Directed by
Tobe Hooper
Steven Spielberg

Movie Meals

I'll be the first to admit that I probably have a food addiction. But I promise I was not hungry when I started this post.

Sometimes, there may be a movie that you've been watching and there's a scene with a food item and you find yourself getting hungry

Resse's Pieces in "E.T." The imaginary food fight scene from "Hook" Any holiday film.

Even if you haven't, I have. A film that came out 15 years ago this week. 15 YEARS!!!! I'm still talking about that damn brown gravy.

Ok. Your turn. Comment below a food movie moment or tweet at @MovieMorty

Sound Tracks: The Addams Family

I was going to post a Sound Tracks blog yesterday, featuring the "Friday the 13th" theme. I listened to it and said it's not worthy of my blog (no offense to Mr. Harry Manfredini, I salute anyone who composes music).

So, this week we'll feature music composed by the talented Marc Shaiman.

I give you "Finale" from "The Addams Family"

Happy Mother's Day

Today is the day for those we call mom. Then of course on Monday, it's back to the whatevers and eye rolls of everyday life. :-)

There have been lots of motherly portrayals on the big screen.

Mommie Dearest. Stepmom. Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

Some of course have been extremely heart breaking. Littlefoot's Mother

Some are...comically disturbing...Hey You Guys!

Now I leave you with a video that will probably require therapy afterwards for the guys.

Who or what is your favorite movie mom or motherly movie?

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there.

Sound Tracks: Vertigo

The film that features this music is possibly Alfred Hitchcock's best film ever.

Composed by Bernard Hermann, this is "Scene D'Amour", featured in the 1958 film, "Vertigo", which if you haven't seen, please do. This track is in my top 5 of all time favorite tracks.

Jackie Cooper passes away at 88

Legendary film star Jackie Cooper has passed away today after a sudden bout of illness.

Most famous in my mind was his work as editor of the Daily Planet, Perry White in the Superman films from 78-87.

You will greatly be missed sir.

Happy Birthday Audrey Hepburn

Today would have been Ms. Hepburn's 82nd birthday if not for her passing away from appendicular cancer on Jan. 20, 1993.

Ms. Hepburn was a beautiful and wonderful actress with starring roles in such films as Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sabrina and Wait Until Dark.

Her final film would be Steven Spielberg's "Always" in which she plays Hap, an angel sent to help Richard Dreyfusss'(is that right?) characters' transition from life to death.

Below is a scene from "Breakfast at Tiffany's with Audrey singing Henry Mancini's beautiful piece, "Moon River"

And also Happy Birthday to my sister, Patty.

Breaking the Fourth Wall

Ok. Another film lesson that is relatively easy.

In a story, you have to think that the people in it are in their own world without outside influences. When 2 people are talking in a room or there is a party at a warehouse, there are hypothetically speaking, 4 walls.

Now, what you may have noticed, mostly in comedies, is that sometimes the character will reverence the audience, which wouldn't normally happen in "their world."

First example that comes to mind is from "Blazing Saddles." Hedley Lamarr is sitting at his desk, contemplating who to send to Rockridge to create hysteria so that plans for the railroad can proceed.

"If I could find a sheriff who so offends the citizens of Rock Ridge that his very appearance would drive them out of town."
[looks into the camera]
"But where would I find such a man?"
[pause]
"Why am I asking you?"

Another example below is from another Mel Brooks film. If you think about it, in every Mel Brooks film there's a breaking of the wall. This one is literal.

And finally, a personal favorite. You'll have to follow the link since no one with the scene will let me have an embedded link. Sigh.

Superman Ending

So what's your favorite "breaking the wall" moment?

Sound Tracks: Forrest Gump

Has it really been a week? Yes it has, Craig. But where has the time gone? It's probably been wasted on those herbal cigarettes.

Sorry. I was channeling tv's Craig Ferguson for a sec there.

Anywho, this week's Sound Tracks comes all the way from 1994.

Music was composed by Alan Silvestri, also famous for Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I give you "Suite from Forrest Gump"

How I Rate Movies

I'll admit that this is kind of a blow off post. But without enough time to watch a movie and no good clips to post, it'll do.

There are certain things I take into account when watching a movie.

Like the acting, relationships, story, camera shots I remember, music relation to scene, feelings, so on and so forth.

Below is the rating system I use.

5 Stars- Will see it twice or more in  theaters, buy the Blu-ray and soundtrack if music is good.

4.5 Stars- Would possibly see it again and possibly buy Blu-ray

4 Stars- Wouldn't rule out ever seeing it again. Won't buy Blu-ray

3.5 Stars- Won't see again. Possibly recommend to certain people

3 Stars-Won't see again

2.5 Stars- Would wonder why I saw it

2 Stars- Will not recommend to the public. People are idiots if they liked it

1.5 Stars- So far, there is only one film I would give this rating to

1 Star- Brain Dead

I'll never give anything below 1 star because as much as a movie could suck, work was still put into and I couldn't deny them at least something.

Happy Birthday, Sarah!

This one is for you.

FILM REVIEW: WIN WIN (2011)

Director: Thomas McCarthy
Cast: Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor, Alex Shaffer

4.75 out of 5 stars

Michael Flahtery (Giamatti) is a small town lawyer and high school wrestling coach along with Stephen Vigman (Tambor). Mike lives with his stay at home wife (Ryan) and two daughters. An elderly man, Leo Poplar (Burt Young) who Mike represents is deemed incompetent and instead of the state taking control, Mike volunteers for the role of caregiver with a $1500/month reward.

Things change course when the elderly man's grandson Kyle (new comer Alex Shaffer) has runaway from his addict mother, Cindy (Melaine Lynskey) and the Flahtery's take him in. As if fate stepped in, Kyle is actually good at wrestling and starts school, joins the team and is included as a part of the family. Things get complicated when Kyle's mom who is recovering, shows up and is ready to take Leo, Kyle and the monthly payment back to Ohio.

One of the better films I've seen in a while, "Win Win" is genuine. At the beginning of the movie, a little girls' stained glass window figure breaks and the 9yr old says "Shit." From then on you know this a real comedy, comparable to "Little Miss Sunshine" or "Juno." Drama is also real with having a runaway teen who has a druggie mother and also of the money issues that Mike has to deal with.

Acting is phenomenal with all actors giving 110%. Relationships are real and enjoyable to watch. Not mentioned above is Mike's friend, Terry (Bobby Cannavale) who is hilarious in all of his scenes. I'm also calling it now that Amy Ryan will be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. She absolutely deserves it.

Such an awesomely awesome film. I would not hesitate seeing it again. Go see it when it comes to your area or "you will fucking die." Highly, highly recommended.

FILM REVIEW: JURASSIC PARK (1993)

Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Richard Attenborough, Jeff Goldblum

4.5 out of 5

Scientists Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neil), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldbum) are invited by billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenbourugh) to preview his new theme park, Jurassic Park. But before the scientist can give the ok for the park to open, they must survive the main attractions.

I saw this film over 15 years ago for the first time and it's been about 3 years since I watched it. Films tend to lose its luster over time. Not Jurassic Park.

Every actor is wonderful and interactions lead to some of the best quotes in film history thanks to the late author, Michael Crichton and screenwriter, David Koepp.

Cinematography done by Dean Cundey captures perfect moments in time. Also, his job being harder because some of the dinosaurs weren't there because they were created using Computer Generated Imagaery (CGI). And who doesn't remember the slow push into the water in the cup with the ripples created by the T-Rex.

Music done by the master, John Williams. That's all I need to.say about that.

The CGI looks just a little dated but still good for now and sometimes better than some I've seen recently.

My one beef with the movie is the "happy ending." It's not a deal breaker but maybe just a tad annoying.

I highly recommend Jurassic Park.

Sound Tracks: Airplane!

Thought I'd do a little weekly feature that showcases the best of film scores.

We'll start with a film that perhaps isn't known for it's music but it's silly and hilarious antics.

Written by Elmer Bernstein, this is the End Credits from the movie, Airplane!

I've always enjoyed the love theme in the middle.

FILM REVIEW: SUCKER PUNCH (2011)

Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone

2.5 out of 5

A young orphaned girl is put into an asylum and through reality and fantasy, needs to find 5 items to help her and her friends escape.

I give props to Mr. Snyder for thinking of an original story that at first, I thought was based off of a graphic novel.

The graphics were good. Didn't like the monster villains to be CGI but oh well. 30% of the movie had to be in slow motion and that did not go well for me.

Acting was ok, considering there was no character development. Costumes were good. Stunts and action were well done and shot well.

Now, the pacing and events were putting me to sleep. Baby Doll (Emily Browning) would need to do her seductive dance to distract whoever had the item they were seeking. The girls were then transported in to their fantasy world to defeat the villains. It became repititous and wore on me.

If you like graphic novels or Zach Snyder's vision, you will probably love it. I unfortunately did not and still feel like I've been sucker punched half an hour afterwards.

Yes. I Cry At the Movies.

There. I said it. I'll go one further. You're not a man if you can't cry during a movie.

I'm not saying you have to bawl at the end of "Sleepless in Seattle" or "Beaches."

But when Bambi's mother dies or Ray Kinsella asks his deceased father to have a catch, perspiration best be forming in your peepers.

It is a perfectly normal and healthy reaction to let a movie move you.

However there is a line. You don't need to be hyperventilating, tears rushing, yelling "HE HAD HER AT HELLO."

Especially not good for a date but we'll save "Perfect Date Films" for another post.

Everytime I watch "The Land Before Time" and "UP", multiple tears exit the canal.

The end of "ET" when the music is building as the ships door closes then there is a 2 sec silence with a close up of Henry Thomas, I'm overwhelmed and perhaps a couple tears.

Hell, I even got emotional from "Inception" during the hallway corridor fight but that is more a film makers sensory overload.

And why haven't you seen "Inception"?

Ok. Your turn. When have you guys and gals cried? Your answers will be kept safe on the internet.

1 out of 24FPS

First, a lesson on film making.

FPS stands for Frames Per Second.

For most films, 24 pictures are taken in 1 second. Some tv shows use a faster rate, that's why Full House looks different from Family Matters. Think about it.

My point being is that I'm sure all of us can pick out one frame that will be embeded in our brains till the day we die.

For some, it could be an archaeologist in a cavern, escaping a huge round boulder.

Or maybe it's a Death Star exploding after the kid and the Rebel Alliance get off a perfect shot.

Probably for most guys it's the perfect girl next door, just out of the pool, slow motion, unhooking her bikini top and exposing...anyway.

Mine, a boy and his new found friend sweeping across the crisp night sky, in front of a fully lit moon.

So. What do you got? What 1 out of 24FPS do you have burned into your head?

FILM REVIEW: FIERCE CREATURES (1997)

Directors: Robert Young, Fred Schepisi
Cast: John Cheese, Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Palin

2.5 out of 5

In this farce, the cast from the hilarious "A Fish Called Wanda" reunite as maintainers of a zoo that will close if it doesn't make a profit. As my wife said, "it's not a sequel, it's an equal."

It actually isn't par with "Wanda." Probably a triple bogey. It had it's funny moments but couldn't make up for the dreadful character interactions and horrid storyline towards the end.

The main actors alone did a nice job portraying their parts alone. But, relationships are not thought through and are muddled.

I felt like Universal said "Hey, Wanda was such a hit, let's get those guys back together and we'll have another hit." The day the execs realize story first, the rest later will be a happy day. I mean look at Pixar for Pete's sake.

As for a recommendation, I can't whole heartedly recommend it.

Happy Birthday Michael Caine

Well, belated birthday. Mr. Caine turned 78 on Monday.

I've always enjoyed every part he has played but I think my favorite would have to be as Sidney Bruhl in "Deathtrap."

Anywho, here's Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon from the BBC2 series, "The Trip."

FILM REVIEW: THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (2011)

Director: George Nolfi
Cast: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, John Slattery, Terence Stamp, Anthony Mackie

4 out of 5

Based on the short story, "Adjustment Team" by Phillip K. Dick, it's a simple story of a up and coming congressman (Matt Damon) and a gifted ballet dancer (Emily Blunt) and what happens when they try to deviate from the plan, set by the "chairman."

Clocking in at 1 Hr, 39 min, the pacing was never slow. Action is well filmed and edited. The effects used support the story and don't make up for story. Music done by Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) was good but not great.

Chemistry between all actors was wonderful. Happy to see Terrence Stamp still working.

Highly recommended.

BEST FILM TRACK EVER

Hey Guys. I'm doing a semi-short post tonight since it's late.

I have spent my life watching and studying movies. Along with that, comes listening to a lot of music, in and out of the movie. My CD collection (yes, I still have them) is full of Motion Picture Score discs.

Goldsmith, Horner, Newman, Zimmer and Shaiman are among my favorite but the one that stands above the rest is John Williams.

This year, Mr. Williams will celebrate over 55 years in the business. His music is known around the world and I tried to count his works on IMDB and couldn't so here's the link

I've had many years to decide my favorite piece ever written and here it is. Titled "Leaving Home," it is from "Superman: The Movie." While it is all good, the best starts at 1:31. Enjoy

NEW SUPER 8 TRAILER

I have been waiting a long time for this movie. I remember when I saw the first teaser trailer of the truck colliding with the train. So after websites popped up dedicated to the movie, analyzing every detail, which led to "fake" websites and computer software for the viral campaign.

Then the longer more detailed Super Bowl version was aired and I felt like a little kid watching some of Spielberg's most famous films as a kid.

I have faith in J.J Abrams. He is written and produced some of the best shows on television and did a wonderful directing job with "Mission: Impossible 3" and "Star Trek"

Here you go. The really new trailer for this summer's blockbuster, "Super 8."

FILM REVIEW: A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988)

Director: Charles Crichton
Cast: John Cleese, Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Palin

4 out of 5

"A Fish Called Wanda" is about 4 con artists involved with a jewel heist but are they coning each other?

A really funny movie. The acting is great from the four principles. I especial enjoyed Kevin Kline's role. Also, I don't care what anyone says, I think Jamie Lee Curtis is beautiful and wonderful. It's also no surprise that the film is a comic hit considering John Cleese wrote it. With both American and British humor, it's the best of both worlds.

Many unforgettable scenes, full of cat and mouse antics, wonderful dialogue and great performances all around, I recommended "A Fish Called Wanda."

FILM REVIEW: MAC AND ME (1988)

Director: Stewart Raffill
Cast: Christine Ebersole, Jonathon Ward, Tina Caspary, Lauren Stanley, Jade Calegory

2 out of 5

Mac and Me is the story of " Mysterious Alien Creature" and his family accidently taken to earth. The youngest is separated and befriends four kids.

This movie did have high hopes in the beginning. Never mind the fact that it is an E.T. ripoff down to the singing of "The Twilight Zone" theme and I believe the same neighborhood. Also, put aside that this is a brand whore's dream. Here's a list products I noticed (by noticed, I mean clearly seen, 3 secs or more of screen time):

Dos Equis
Skittles
Coke-a-Cola
United Moving
Chicago Cubs
LA Dodgers
Avia Shoes
Sears (character who worked there)
Coors
McDonald's (which had a birthday party, group of rehearsed dancers in the parking lot and inside, a character who worked there and Ronald frickin McDonald.)

The alien creatures for the most part are latex suits with actors inside. Nothing to be proud about. Some special effects were good. Others were really bad.

Acting wasn't terrible. Some of Michael's (Jonathon Ward) lines and emotions seemed forced. I enjoyed Christine Ebersole as the mom and am now happy to know where I've known her from.

I was surprised to see that a musical idol of mine, Alan Silvestri, had scored the film. This is not his best. Far from it. My guess is the producers didn't want to pay him because he had already had success with "Back to the Future" and "Romancing the Stone." Or perhaps he was spread thin considering "Mac and Me", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "My Stepmother is an Alien," which he all scored came out in 1988 (we know the winner of the three).

Now, the biggest reason for the bad rating...the ending. I'm not going to tell you what happens. You'll just have to watch it or for some, like me, watch it again after a long period of absence.

I only recommend "Mac and Me" really to those that haven't seen it in a while. You'll probably will come out of it dissapointed if you have not viewed it. Also, note to parents with younger children, some of the scenes towards the end are scary. So much that I'd say horrific so over the age of 8 or 9.

LENNY (1974)

DIRECTOR: Bob Fosse
CAST: Dustin Hoffman, Valerie Perrine

3.5 out of 5

"Lenny" is about the life and downfall of the controversial stand-up comedian, Lenny Bruce. It received 6 Oscar nominations.

Filmed in a quasi-documentary style, I found myself not being able to get comfortable with it. Handheld shots are mixed with stationary. I however, did like the use of the gritty B&W for the film.

What makes this film so good is the performance by Dustin Hoffman who takes on the title character. Within the first few words, I knew that unlike some actors, I had not seen Mr. Hoffman perform this one. Playing his wife was the then up and coming Valerie Perrine, who didn't necessarily wow me but I was not disappointed at all by her performance.

If you want a gritty, sometimes funny and very adult oriented movie (nudity, language, drug use) with a wonderful Dustin Hoffman performance, I recommend "Lenny."

First and only?

Hey everyone out there. By the title, you should deduce that this is my first blog out of a hopeful many.

You'll see a lot of film reviews, personal stories, local events mainly pertaining to entertainment and possible rambling-ons.

Little about me. Video Production student at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio. Married to Sarah for 1 1/2 years out of 6 years together. We have a young daughter. Full-time slave in the front store of a pharmacy.
